Hello everyone! I'm planning my first trip to India (Andhra Pradesh) and would appreciate any advice in terms of planning and travelling that you all can give. I have never been anywhere, so I know I need to get a passport. I believe I will also need a visa. How do you go about getting one? Where do you go? What kind of visa would I need?

What should I expect on that long flight! *giggle* My trip will be this coming December 2007, so I know it's a bit early in planning, but I want to be well prepared by the time I leave. I'm so excited about it! It's been my dream to go to India for years, and finally it's coming true!

I will be meeting my sweetie's family, and many of them don't know any English. What are some Telugu phrases I could use with them? I still haven't had much luck in finding any good learning tools for Telugu.

Thanks all!

If you can, do visit konaseema(east and west godavari districts). They are too good and are the places where movies are shot.

But i suggest you travel a bit interior so that you can see how beautiful it is.

That's totally need! I actually just saw the movie Godavari, which I really enjoyed. It would be neat to see where it was filmed! ;-)

Oh! in which case, there is a cruise service in godavari near pattiseema. Thats where the movie godavari was shot.

It's a day long cruise and is very good (though i think you shud watchout for the food). If the cruise runs till december, I would recommend that you take that cruise.

But if you are coming in a festival season, make sure that you book atleast a month in advance.

Really?? That's so neat! It would be totally fun to go for a cruise there. We haven't finalized the trip dates, but will be doing so soon. I think we'll be booking our flights sometime by March. The plan is to go toward the end of December (last week perhaps) and stay for the first 3 weeks of Jan. Is there a particular timeframe in which to book flights at a better rate?

I'll be sure to bring up the cruise idea too. It probably wouldn't hurt to look into that now.

Thanks for this info! :-)

Visa - http://www.cgisf.org/ (If you are in west coast)
http://chicago.indianconsulate.com/ (If you are in mid west)
http://www.indianembassy.org/newsite/default.asp (If you are in east coast)

You need a tourist visa.

Regarding flight, it depends on which airline you take. My personal fav is Singapore. Usually Singapore, Malaysian and Cathay Pacific are good. European carriers come next(Lufthansa, KLM). I have not tried any US carriers.

Let me know if you need info, I can help. I travel to India once in 6 months.

Thanks for the links. :-) I'm on the west coast, so that's helpful. I think we'll be booking on Singapore airlines, but am not sure. I guess I'll just have to start researching flights now.

About how long does it take to get a visa?

Its usually easy to get a visa.

If you visit the SF office, it will take just a day. You have to apply in the morning and you can collect the passport in the evening. If you mail it in, it will take 5-10 business days.

You should apply at least 1 month in advance.

I'm getting excited!
